Nigeria Professional Football League side Sunshine Stars FC of Akure are celebrating their 23 years of existence, having been formed on January 11, 1995.
“Dear fan, your Club started from the bottom on this day 11/01/95 & now we are here. It’s been 23 years of greatness. HBD Sunshine Stars FC🎂!,” the club tweeted on Thursday.
The club, who play their home matches at 5,500-capacity Akure Township Stadium are one of the running football activities of Ondo State Football Agency.
Nicknamed The Owena Waves, Sunshine won the National Division One in 2001 and 2007 and represented Nigeria in the CAF Champions League in 2012, reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious continental club competition. They also reached the last four in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2011 and exited West African Club Championship (UFOA Cup) in the First Round in 2009.
The team finished 10th in the 2016-2017 season NPFL standings League.
