Nigeria have failed to reach 2018 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in Uruguay after the Flamingos lost out to Cameroon on an away goal rule following 3-3 aggregate score over two legs.
A 2-2 draw in the first leg at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin-City a fortnight ago, left Nigeria with a mountain to climb in Yaoundé, but could only battle their hosts to 1-1 draw in the corresponding tie at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Sunday.
The finals of the 6th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which holds every two years will be held in Uruguay from 13 November to 1 December later in the year.
The Flamingos have qualified for every edition of the global championship since its inception in 2008. In fact, they edged out their Cameroonian counterparts, ‘Les Jeunes Lionnes’ to qualify for the maiden edition hosted in New Zealand in 2008.
Ahead of the decider, Nigeria coach Bala Nkiyu had beefed up the squad and toughened the youngsters with a couple of high-profile friendly matches.
